Doom - Fury X Benchmarks

  Doom

I'm a little late to party by a few days, but better late than ever. Doom is one of the most highly anticipated titles of the year. Since it’s awesome E3 reveal gamers have been drooling and waiting to get those wonderful graphics on their monitors. Well that has come for many fans. Usually the graphics shown at E3 aren’t used in the final product. That is not the case with Doom. The game is gorgeous and offers plenty of settings. So even if you are gaming on a laptop you can tweak tons of graphical settings to suit your needs. With all of that being said Doom can still stress some of the fastest cards on the mark at high resolutions.

As Doom fans expected, it doesn’t take long to start killing demons. The game places you in all types of situations and definitely has an old school feel to it. It has everything you’ll expect, tons of violence, tons of blood, demons, monsters, cool melee kills, enemies giving the player health\ammo and the list goes on and one. The gameplay is fairly fast paced and the enemy AI appears to get more difficult as the game progresses. The game makes you feel like a real bad ass, however, the enemies will try their hardest to kill you. Just when you think you are man handling everything in sight a sneaky enemy might pull a OHK [one-hit-knockout] and it’s usually gruesome. Everything in this game is gruesome. It reminds me of the older days when games were violent just to be violent.

With all of that being said let’s get to what you came here for, the Fury X benchmarks. Here is my setup:

-What is FPS Min Caliber?-

You’ll notice that I added something named “FPS Min Caliber”. Basically FPS Min Caliber is something I came up to differentiate between FPS absolute minimum which could simply be a data loading point during gameplay etc. The FPS Min Caliber ™ is basically my way of letting you know lowest FPS average you’ll see during gameplay 1% of the time out of 100%. The minimum fps [FPS min] can be very misleading. FPS min is what you'll usually encounter only 0.1% of the time out of 100%. This results vary greatly, even on the same PC. This normally occurs during loading, saving etc. I think it will be better to focus on what most gamers will experience. Obviously the average FPS and Frame Time is what you'll encounter 99% of your playtime. I think it's a feature you'll learn to love. I plan to continue using this in the future as well. If you still can't understand this then basically a "97th Percentile".

1440p - Real Time Benchmarks

This game does not feature a benchmarking tool so I decided to use the level “Know Your Enemy” since it is well rounded and seems decently demanding. As I progress throughout the game I’ll benchmark different areas if I find any areas that seem to worth benchmarking. All benchmarks are using the Ultra settings unless otherwise stated.

I'm basically getting the same performance when setting the 'Virtual Texturing Page Size" to "Nightmare". I did notice an increase in image quality. There is basically no penalty at 2560x1440p with using Ultra + Nightmare settings along with TSSAA[8TX]. The Fury X performs well and I had no issues, but I think there might be a patch soon.

I did notice little issues that disrupted the FPS\Frame Time when I was not benchmarking. Basically if you stand and look at the entire room from a different view the performance likes to drop. However, if you go to opposite side of the room and look at the same assets in the room, there will be no performance hit. Little things like that will be addressed soon I hope. It isn't game breaking and won't effect gameplay unless you are gaming at 4K or higher. That's just something I noticed and I thought I'd pass along.

4K was much better than I expected. The game is very playable and obviously you can lower the graphical settings to get more performance. I normally max all of my games when benchmarking. No game really needs anti-aliasing at 2160p, but the performance hit wasn't as bad as I expected. Doom is a fast paced game with tons of action so you won't be standing still to really admire much of the image quality with blood and guts flying around.

My old X58 build is still holding up pretty well. If you are on a newer platform you'll probably see up to a 6% increase in overall performance at 4K based on other Fury X reviews using newer hardware. I have minor complaints with the performance @ 4K, but it would be good to see what could be gained if AMD GPUs could run OpenGL 4.5 instead of 4.3. AMD ran OpenGL 4.5 in the Doom Beta and did very well. Now that the game has released Nvidia cards are running OpenGL 4.5 and AMD is only 4.3 for some odd reason. Hopefully this is resolved. Other than the OpenGL fix I'm waiting on the Vulkan API update now so check back soon for updates.
